A Questionnaire for Assessment of Physical Activity in Thailand
Abstract
dc:descriptionInformation relative to the physical activity level and the association of physical activity with chronic disease risk in the Thai population is currently uncertain partly due to the lack of a valid and reliable physical activity assessment instrument for the population. Self-report physical activity questionnaires have been shown to be a valid, reliable, practical, low cost, and feasible assessment tools for use in large-scale, population based research. The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate a short, self-administered Thai Physical Activity Questionnaire (TPAQ) that assessed physical activity over the past 7 days. The final version of TPAQ contained 24 items and was developed from a prototype TPAQ (81 items) using item selection analysis based on the responses from 887 middle age (26--50 years old, mean +/- S.D. = 37.8 +/- 7.2) included from a random sample of 5,000 individuals living in Bangkok, Thailand. The final TPAQ was evaluated psychometrically for validity (r = .30) using 7-day Computer Science Application Inc. accelerometer monitoring and for test-retest reliability (R = .85) over a 7-day interval in 71 volunteers, mean age (+/- S.D.) 39.3 (+/-6.5) years. In addition, group differentiation between physical activity categories (occupational, household, and leisure activity) and respondents' demographic characteristics was conducted to support the construct validity of the final TPAQ. Results indicated that the validity and reliability of the TPAQ was consistent with other English physical activity questionnaires, therefore, was feasible to be a physical activity assessment tool for epidemiologic study of the urban and suburban, middle age Thai population. The TPAQ will be a useful measure for epidemiologic investigations on health and diseases problems related to physical activity in the urban and suburban Thai population.
