"Elements of Language Variation in Palsgrave's ""Lesclarcissement De La Langue Francoyse"" (1530)"
Abstract
dc:descriptionThe second part of the dissertation is devoted to Palsgrave's use of literary authority in conjunction with his observations on variation in French. Palsgrave's goal was to formulate a set of grammatical rules which would thoroughly describe the French language for English learners, and he incorporated both literary and non-literary varieties in his model of description. I identify the authors consulted by Palsgrave, the literary traditions to which they belong, their frequency of citation in {\it Lesclarcissement}, as well as possible reasons for their selection.
