The Contested Space of Black Female Sexuality: Communal Norms and Female Sexual Agency in Sub -Saharan Francophone Novels

Reading these novels in the political mode of interpretation allows one to identify how this oppression works and what is at stake in this control: maintenance of racial communal borders, protection of patrilineal descent, and thus male dominance, but also, maintenance of racial dominance, specifically white males controlling black female sexuality. Most of the female authors in this study offer formal solutions to the elimination of gender oppression in the aesthetic realm, solutions that imagine alternative communities where female sexual agency is an ideological position.
