White Racism /Redface Minstrels: Regimes of Power in Representation

"This research focuses on the embedded stereotypical assumptions in the expression of White Euroamerican mythologies about American Indians, prejudice and racism toward American Indians, and disrespect for Indian religious symbols, practices, and iconography. This project is a case study of the direct and indirect indexical speech and the strategies, such as altruism, used to mask the racializing language at work in the testimonies presented by students, alumni, and community members during an In-Take Session organized by the University's Board of Trustees, entitled ""Dialogue on Chief Illiniwek."" I argue herein that Chief Illiniwek is a discourse, a racialized regime of representation---a signifying practice---a stereotype that symbolically fixes boundaries and operates as a representational system and a tool for oppression."
