A Real -Time Core Extraction System for Soil Nitrates

Many methods exist to predict nitrates, but few have been applied in the field because a real-time extraction system is not available. For this reason, an intact core extraction procedure was tested that might be used in the field for the prediction of soil nitrates. This system used an intact core analysis, where an extracting solution was pushed through a soil core held between two filters, and an ion selective field effect transistor (ISFET) was used to sense soil nitrates in real time. Results of the test indicate that nitrate extraction and washout occurred in the soil cores, and that peak, slope, and cumulative area parameters fitted to the nitrate extraction curve indicate prediction in several seconds.
