Representations of Place: Perspectives From Seasonal Homeowners, Local Residents, and Mass Media

This dissertation is an attempt to bridge the gap between place theories and more narrative approaches. To this end, a mixture of quantitative and qualitative approaches were used. This diversity in methods allows for a deeper understanding of place by incorporating multiple representations of place. Place research is an area of study that begs for new perspectives, new theories, and new methodologies. Place is more than a geographically determined space; it is a socially constructed phenomenon that continually changes dependent upon its social, political, and historic context.
