Interscholastic Sport Teams as the Nexus for a Sense of Community in Rural Settings

A major finding of this study was that the SOC in the geographic and interest communities were nearly identical. This finding suggests that in small, rural communities the town and the team are one in the same and that separating out the two communities may not be possible. Brodsky and Marks (2001) symbiotic relationship, the close relationship between citizens and their local community school system and elements of the geographic community being embedded in the interest community of Girl's Basketball are presented as reason for this finding. Further research in this area in a variety of community sizes also utilizing several different levels of sport may lead to a clearer picture in this area of SOC and sport. As such, recommendations for areas of future research in this area are discussed.
