Seven Anthems for Men's Voices by Matthew Locke: Transcriptions and Commentary
Abstract
dc:descriptionA brief sketch of Locke's life and work, as well as a summary of the writings of other scholars regarding his compositional style, is included. In an attempt to place the transcribed anthems into an historical context, there are separate chapters on Locke's sacred music and the fourteen anthems for men's voices. These are designed to help the reader see the evolution of Locke's style (these are his earliest known works). The anthems form a bridge between the pre-Commonwealth and Restoration repertories. They show the influence of the earlier Italian style, but also represent a continuation of the English tradition of domestic devotional music.
