A Study of the Factors Which Influence Collegiate Choral Ensemble Participation by Non-Music Majors at Six State-Supported Universities in Illinois

Results indicated that high school experiences designed to foster personal and musical growth, allow for interaction with others, and express thoughts and ideas through music were strong indicators of the kinds of experiences that led to collegiate choral participation. Examples include festivals, contests, All-State and District choirs, and musicals. Additionally, perceptions that the high school choral program was designed to teach music reading, music history, choral literature, and musical independence emerged as important factors. Participants were highly influenced by their parents, and found the choral experience meaningful on several levels. The participants considered themselves to be fine overall musicians, singers, and music listeners. They rated themselves less strongly as music readers and instrumentalists, and quite low as composers and dancers.
