Johnny Smith: Melodic Interpretation and Improvisational Techniques

This paper includes eight melodies and improvised solos that were transcribed by the author. Each melody and solo has been analyzed in regards to the material used in that particular piece as well as their relationship to the other pieces found in the paper. Certain recurring melodic and harmonic devices have been isolated and analyzed further in regards to their use in Smith's larger catalogue of works. By providing an analysis of Smith's harmonic and melodic approach to individual pieces, as well as his characteristic improvisational devices, this paper provides a complete break down of the playing style of one of the most important figures in jazz guitar history.
