Isso-Ryu Nohkan (Noh Flute): Tradition and Continuity in the Music of Noh Drama

These analyses demonstrate that the traditions of musical style and usage remain vastly influential over contemporary Noh composition and performance practice. Nohkan music in contemporary Noh dramas does not depart in any significant way from traditional forms, content, and usage. The few variations noted would seem to reflect the personalities and preferences of individual musicians and composers rather than represent an iconoclastic movement to break with past traditions. In fact, by largely following traditional practices rather than indulging in any great departures, it becomes more likely that the new plays could eventually become a part of the traditional repertoire.
