The Use of Technology in Applied Studio Instruction at the Collegiate Level

To determine the use of technology in applied instruction, a questionnaire was distributed to an assembled listed of instructors that were referred by the members of Association of Technology in Music Instruction (ATMI), which served as the sampling frame for the study. Sixty-one percent of the sampling frame responded to the questionnaire. Topics addressed in the questionnaire were software applications and hardware used, frequency of use, incorporation of technology into instruction, accessibility to technology, and school and instructor demographics. Descriptive statistics were utilized in this study to analyze the responses to the questionnaire. Results showed that applied instructors believe that technology can be a valuable teaching tool, especially in applied instruction, where students, no matter their type of learning style, are consistently enhancing and/or learning new skills and concepts. Additionally, only a few instructors implement advanced use of technology in applied instruction. Recommendations covered include more frequent use and further advancement of technology in applied instruction.
