Joseph Riepel's Concerto Pastorale in B Flat for Clarinet and Bassoon Considered From the Perspective of the Composer's Theory of Composition
Abstract
dc:descriptionThe second portion of this project is to exam the Pastorale in light of Riepel's own theory of composition in order to reach a better understanding of how he applied to his own compositions the concepts he set forth in the first two chapters of his Anfangsgrunde. Following a historical view of Riepel, the theories presented in the first two chapters of his treatise will be described and implemented to analyze his Concerto Pastorale. Analysis of this piece will not only emphasize the consistency of Riepel's theoretical ideas as applied to his own compositional work, but also show the complexity and integrity of his musical ideas.
