Three Essays on the Economics of Discrimination and Conflict

The third essay provides a critical review of the economic literature on conflict. I first provide an introduction to economic theories of conflict. I then turn to the empirical literature. In particular, I focus on the role of economic inequality, ethnic diversity, and resource abundance as key determinants of conflict. I then consider reasons for the increasing ethnicization of conflict in unequal societies. Lastly, I consider the role of visceral factors in the construction of violence. I organize the often ambiguous evidence unearthed in the literature; discuss the key insights; and identify directions for future research.
