Three Papers on Liberalization Policies in Developing and Transition Countries
Abstract
dc:description"The role of institutions in the method of privatization. The final paper of the dissertation discusses the possible reasons that governments might choose ""inefficient"" methods of privatization. An application of a political economy model suggests that both altruistic and budget-maximizing politicians tend towards auctions more than politicians that are captured by special interests. Nonparametric classification-tree and means analysis of privatization decisions in the telecommunications industry in developing countries suggests that deeper financial markets and government deficits help constrain political temptation to bargain with insiders."
