Three Essays on Private and Public Finance in Argentina
Abstract
dc:description"This study focuses on two broad topics related to private and public finance in Argentina during the 1990s. On the private finance side, the first 2 chapters analyze the issue of bank efficiency. In chapter 1, cost ""X""-inefficiency of financial institutions is estimated via the Distribution-Free Approach, introduced by Berger (1993), and then banks with different characteristics (private vs. public and domestic vs. foreign) are evaluated based on their cost distribution by using quantile regression analysis. In chapter 2, three well-known measures of scale and scope efficiency are estimated; namely, the Ray Scale Economy Measure (Baumol, Panzar, and Willig, 1982), the Expansion Path Scale Economy Measure (Berger, Hanweck and Humphrey, 1987), and the Expansion Path Subadditivity Measure (Berger et al., 1987). On the public finance side, chapter 3 offers a novel methodology to account for how politics and institutional weaknesses of provincial jurisdictions in Argentina (in addition to economic variables) have played important roles by allowing these provinces to raise the aggregate risks for the country by excessive borrowing and spending."
