Quality, Cost, and Access Issues in Nursing Home Care

Third, this paper also provides a theoretical explanation of the observed pattern in the nursing home industry that non-profit institutions serve a lower percentage of Medicaid patients than do for-profit facilities. This paper shows that information disparities regarding quality between providers and consumers fosters an environment in which the percentage of consumers who are uninformed is a key factor in determining patient mix. Specifically, an increase in uninformed consumers shifts patient mix away from private pay consumers in proprietary firms while shifting it toward private pay consumers in non-profit firms.
