Jewish Multi -Ethnicities in Post -Soviet Russia: An Eventful Ethnography of the Moscow Choral Synagogue

My work's emphasis on cultural, economic, and political transformation both inside and outside the synagogue can provide new insights into both post-Soviet ethnography and Jewish studies. Much of the research done on emerging market practices in the former Soviet Union emphasizes the concept of transition and fails to fully address the ways in which people creatively react to and shape their social worlds. I consider institutional legacies (through archival and ethnographic research) to show how social actors transformed past practices to rebuild their religious institution, as well as to adjust themselves to the uncertainties of the post-Soviet economy and society.
