Taarab Texts, Gender, and Islam in an Urban East African Context: Social Transformations Among the Waswahili of Mombasa, Kenya

This study fits into the current shift in the anthropological study of music that emphasizes not only the importance of understanding music as reflecting broad cultural themes but also the benefit of using musical analysis to discern and understand complex socio-cultural changes. By combining an analysis of musical performance, gendered practices, and song text to understand social and cultural practices and meanings, this study draws upon a combination of the disciplines of ethnomusicology, feminist anthropology, and performance studies. As such, I address the contemporary critical issue concerning the nature and role of anthropology in a world that has become smaller and less distinct as not only social and political boundaries but also disciplinary borderlands continue to shift and indeed to diminish in importance.
