Engaging the Center: On Being Indonesian Citizens in Lombok, Eastern Indonesia

Abstract

dc:description

Beyond the study of hegemony, center and periphery, this study explores narratives of hopes. These narratives present how Indonesia's islanders seek to participate in a democratic and plural civil society. They seek social justice and an end to corruption. Through looking at their narratives as they refuse to give up their land and engage both reformist and hegemonic forces in the center, we are better able to understand both the mechanisms which the state uses to suppress citizens' rights and the ways in which the marginalize compromise and negotiate their interests. Unlike the ambivalent and fractured qualities of the center emphasized here, and unlike the seemingly contradictory strategies taken up by these farmers, their hopes and protests are neither ambiguous nor contradictory. They want state development plans which include rather than exclude them, plans which reduce inequalities rather than exacerbate them. From this perspective, understanding the demands of marginalized populations in the periphery, both spatial and economic, should be the starting point for inclusive participatory development.
