Rimarishpa Kausanchik: Dialogical Encounters. Festive Ritual Practices and the Making of the Otavalan Moral and Mythic Community
Abstract
dc:descriptionThird, I illustrate through various ethnographic examples the multivocality, complexity, and versatility of ritual. Otavalan festive ritual practices emphasize collective participation, simultaneity of action and discourse, collaborative and contested meaning making, transformation, and improvisation that, together, produce an extraordinary generative cultural tension. Beyond embodying collective expression, Otavalan ritual practices constitute enduring social institutions. As cultural and symbolic systems, Otavalan festival performances enable developing and continuing expression that challenges linear historical narratives of representation and the processes behind their production.
