Biocontrol Systems for Rhizotocnia Disease of Soybean

The detection of proteolytic activity by strain B153-2-2 and isolate 2B-12 indicated the possible involvement of extracellular enzymes in antagonism and biocontrol. Antagonism by cell-free culture filtrate fractions indicated that strain B153-2-2 produced an active metabolite. Endopeptidase, acid protease, and an extracellular proteinase (metalloproteinase) were detected in the interaction and were identified based on molecular cut-off, pH range, and inactivation by inhibitors. Extracellular enzymes altered the branching pattern of R. solani isolate 2B-12 and were effective in retarding the growth of the fungal pathogen.
