In the Service of the Tsar: European Mercenary Officers and the Reception of Military Reform in Russia, 1654-1667
Abstract
dc:descriptionThe European officers of these regiments possessed demonstrable military expertise and brought this expertise to their regiments, and were therefore an important cultural connection between Russia and Europe. Their presence in Russia demonstrated that the Russian state assessed its international objectives and sought out appropriate tools in the form of these mercenaries for the implementation of military reform. The state monitored the quality of the mercenary officers and based their rank and pay levels on their ability to use the weapons of the day, pikes and muskets, suggesting the professional nature of the mercenary officers on the whole.
