Binuclear Transition Metal Derivatives of 1,2-Bis(indenyl)ethane

Heating Ru3(CO)12 with 1,2-bis(indenyl)ethane in xylene provided the binuclear compounds Ru2(CO)4(mu-(eta 5-C9H6)2C2H4 and [(eta5-C9H6)C2H 4(C9H7)Ru(CO)2]2. The corresponding reaction in heptane gave instead the tetranuclear cluster [Ru4H(CO) 9(mu3-eta2-eta2-eta 5-C9H6)](C2H4)(C 9H7). The structure of the rac form of Ru 2(CO)4(mu-(eta5-C9H6) 2C2H4 was determined by x-ray crystallography.
