Synthetic Chiral Stationary Phases in Enantioselective Liquid Chromatography

The occurrence of π - π face to face and π - π face to edge interactions on a particular type of chiral stationary phase (CSP) used for chromatographic separations of enantiomers has been studied. Highly polarizable aromatic substituents, such as halogens, have been found to enhance π - π face to face interactions and can be used in the designs of new CSPs so as to improve their enantioselectivity. The structural elements required for successful enantioseparations of hydantoins and thiohydantoins were systematically investigated with the aforementioned CSP. Additionally, a new CSP in its family was rationally designed and synthesized in an attempt to optimize its chromatographic performance.
