Microtribodynamics of Sub-Five Nanometers Flying Head -Disk Interfaces in Magnetic Storage
Abstract
dc:descriptionA unique feature of this work is the incorporation of the interfacial adhesive forces in sub-10 nm flying and contacting HDIs, and the inclusion of realistic surface roughness. Furthermore, a systematic modeling approach was established that includes system independent fundamental interfacial (friction, adhesion and contact) forces and system dependent dynamic models, and their implementation to magnetic storage. Design criteria for sub-5 nm flying HDIs to avoid catastrophic head-disk instabilities due to adhesion were established by performing a 33 full factorial design-of-experiment. The more complicated issue of the presence of both adhesive and friction forces at the interface was investigated using a proposed 2-degree-of-freedom dynamic model. Based on the results, design guidelines were suggested to ensure reduced slider vibrations under continuous contact-recording conditions.
