Expression of the transgene was associated with increased milk production and increased piglet growth by transgenic reared piglets. Increased lactose synthesis in the may increase the contribution of lactose to the osmotic balance of colostrum, therefore increasing the water content and overall volume. Increased volume may explain the increased milk component intake by transgenic litters, resulting in increased growth of transgenic reared litters.
