Abstract
dc:descriptionLess scatter is demonstrated for shafts in clay versus those in sand. More scatter is apparent for shafts constructed using slurry. Little scatter is shown for cased shafts. No trend is shown for slump, date of construction, or type of drilling tool. No significant effect is found for the rate of loading, although tests carried out in less than 4 hours show somewhat less scatter, and the majority of load tests are run in less than 4 hours. No significant effect is apparent for the proximity of the reaction shafts or the failure criterion used. No effect of the shaft dimensions is demonstrated since the dependence on shaft diameter is accounted for in the failure criterion. Caution should be exercised since few large shafts have been included.
