"The results quantify the uncertainty in prediction of contaminant concentration at the leading and trailing edges of a plume. This has important implications for regulatory assessments for hazardous components which often require calculations of arrival times for low concentration values. Other analytical results show that spatial variability leads to ""pseudo"" kinetic behavior of the ensemble-averaged plume, in particular, a time dependent apparent retardation and an enhanced dispersion."
