Reliability-Based Groundwater Monitoring System Design

dc:descriptionDetection monitoring systems composed of a single row of wells at different spacing and different distances from the contaminant source were evaluated. It is shown that, out of these systems, the optimal detection system is composed of closely spaced wells located near the source of contaminants. Assessment monitoring systems may be composed of two rows of wells. The first row serves as a detection system, whereas the second row helps assess the extent of contamination. Out of the row characteristics evaluated, the second row of wells should be placed downstream of the detection system and should be composed of wells more closely spaced than in the first row. For the conditions analyzed, when an individual well detects a plume, an optimal distance perpendicular to the direction of flow was found where the plume width uncertainty was minimized. Finally, when subsurface uncertainty in the form a window connecting two aquifers is incorporated, it was determined that the optimal system should be placed at close to the source to minimize the effect of the window.
