Investigation of Coarse Aggregate Morphology Affecting Hot Mix Behavior Using Image Analysis

Abstract

dc:description

The coarse aggregate size, gradation and morphologies affect behaviors of asphalt mixes, however, the relationship is not yet well understood due to the lack of quantitative measurement of these important physical properties. Research work of this thesis aims at quantifying the size, gradation and different levels of coarse aggregate morphologies such as flat and elongated ration, angularity and surface texture using an image analysis approach, and linking these quantities to the behaviors of asphalt mixes in highway and laboratory conditions. The image analysis of aggregate size, gradation and morphology is performed in an image analysis device, University of Illinois Aggregate Image Analyzer (UIAIA). Coarse aggregate samples of varying sizes and shapes as analyzed in this study come from the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) Pavement Test Track, as well as nine participant State highway agencies, together with the required binder, fine aggregate and mineral filler for making Superpave asphalt mixes in the laboratory following the provided job mix formulas. The imaging based aggregate size, gradation and morphological indices are successfully correlated to rut depths of the NCAT Pavement Test Track sections, as well as the resilient responses and permanent deformation characteristics of asphalt mixes tested in laboratory at University of Illinois.
