Transformation of Trichloromethanes in Iron(ii)-Containing Environments

dc:descriptionThe oxidation state of structural Fe in clay minerals greatly alters the surface chemistry, and has a large impact on clay-organic interactions. RCCl3 were reacted with oxidized, reduced, and reoxidized forms of three different smectites, montmorillonite (Upton), ferruginous smectite (SWa-1), and nontronite (NG-1), in aqueous suspension. The adsorption rate of RCCl3 in clay minerals showed a strong correlation with the iron(II) content of the clay (r2 = 0.94). The clay surface behaves as a Bronsted base and promotes RCCl3 dehydrochlorination (elimination). The adsorption kinetics at the water-clay interface could be described by the formation of a precursor complex prior to RCCl3 dehydrochlorination.
