A Phonetic Examination of C -to -V Place Assimilation

The examination of lexical stress effects on C-to-V coarticulation indicates that the degree of coarticulation is not significantly different in stressed and unstressed syllables. This provides a theoretical implication that lexical stress will not be a conditioning factor for C-to-V place assimilation in phonology, which is consistent with the phonological pattern that very few languages involve C-to-V place assimilation in stressless contexts. This supports the claim that phonetic nature and tendencies are mirrored in phonological patterns (Donegan & Stampe, 1979; Hayes, 1996; Lindblom, 1983; Ohala, 1974, 1981, 1983, 1990, 1993; Stampe, 1973), and suggests that phonological assimilation stems from phonetic coarticulation.
