Three Subcategories of Nouns in Japanese

The proposed analyses have three theoretical implications. First, they directly bear upon Sells' (1996a) distinction between morphological and syntactic categories, arguing that NN, VN, and AN are morphological categories that project as DPs in the syntax. Second, they lead to the view that functional elements are morphologically realized either as suffixes or as separate words in Japanese (see Fukui and Takano 1998). Third, they corroborate the claim that predicates formed in the syntax as well as in the lexicon assign theta roles and check accusative Case (Mohanan 1997, Butt 1997, and Alsina 1997 among others).
