Examining Contemporary Congressional Theories Historically: Essays on the Congress of the Confederate States of America
Abstract
dc:descriptionThe third essay investigates the causes behind the no-party structure in the Confederacy. I find that the absence of parties was in fact due to partisan activity within the Confederate Constitutional Convention. In short, Democrats used their majority status to prohibit, through Constitutional amendment, the two major issues (protective tariffs and federal funding for internal improvements) that served as the basis for the Whig party and the Second Party System.
