The superficial layers of the SC (interconnected with the PBN) indicate both similarities and difference between the SC and PBN. SC cells respond to the virtual targets, but much less vigorously that PBN cells. However, the retinotopic representation of target location appears fairly good. SC cells reset their activity during saccades to virtual targets, but only for contraversive saccades, whereas the PBN resets for both ipsiversive and contraversive saccades. Finally, SC responses are enhanced by good attentiveness, but only for the real targets.
