dc:descriptionThe reactions of 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedione on O/Pt(110) have been studied with temperature-programmed desorption. Unlike hexafluoropentanedione on oxygen-precovered nickel and copper, hexafluoropentanedione does not etch oxygen-precovered platinum. Hexafluoropentanedione decomposes below 350 K, yielding acetaldehyde, trifluoroacetone, and carbon that remains on the surface. An unidentified compound desorbs from the surface as well. The decomposition of hexafluoropentanedione on O/Pt(110) means that it will not be a good etchant for platinum.
