Experimental and Modeling Studies of the Stability of Pitting Corrosion on Pure Aluminum in Basic Chloride Solutions

Abstract

dc:description

The quasi steady state model was expanded to include homogeneous bulk reactions for hydrolysis and complexation reactions. The model predicted pH values of 2.5 to 3.0, values that agreed well with experimental measurements, only when the first two hydrolysis reactions of aluminum were included in the model. The addition of a complexation reaction and third hydrolysis reaction predicted a pH of 5 and a concentration of a neutral species, Al(OH)$\sb2$Cl, that was orders of magnitude smaller than the suggested saturation concentration. Finally, the model that included the first two aluminum hydrolysis reactions predicted concentration profiles that were the same as the concentration profiles of the simple chemistry model demonstrating, perhaps, the validity of the use of the simple chemistry and the results of the simple chemistry modeling.
