Engaging Adolescents in Organized Youth Programs: An Analysis of Individual and Contextual Factors

Results from the investigation of the role of program-level factors in the engagement process revealed four factors: (1) youth receiving verbal encouragement and strategic feedback from the leaders, (2) leaders' efforts to monitor the setting for the presence of diversions and exciting or novel activities, (3) youth experience of positive interpersonal relationships with peers and the leaders, and (4) the leaders' cultivation of an autonomy-supportive climate. Implications for practice and future research are discussed.
