Tales From the Front: Sexual Harassment and Women's Career Development

Findings indicate that the majority of participants suffered major blows to their self-confidence, particularly in relation to work, as a result of the discrimination and harassment they experienced. The vast majority of questionnaire respondents, and all the interviewees, attributed some level of individual blame on their harassers. Results indicate that self-blame can have damaging effects, whereas focusing blame on the company is, more related to externalized expression of negative emotions. Further, these data provide evidence of the long-lasting consequences of being victimized. Although many women discuss the process of recovery, this was described as a difficult road, with lasting damage, both monetary and psychological.
