Assessing Assessment: A Qualitative Evaluation of Psychological Assessment Applied to a Foster/adoptive Population

The findings bear upon both school assessments and independent assessments. Mothers were satisfied with school assessments when the presenting problems were academic, but preferred independent assessments for more complex diagnostic evaluations. Mothers also valued assessments completed by students or an intern over those completed by independent professionals, apparently because they believed these assessments to be particularly thorough. Recommendations for how psychologists can provide adequately thorough, effectively communicated, useful assessments for foster/adoptive children are discussed.
