Applications of Ideal Point Approaches to Scale Construction and Scoring in Personality Measurement: The Development of a Six-Faceted Measure of Conscientiousness

Results clearly showed that the ideal point approach was more advantageous than traditionally used methods. First, ideal point models showed better fits to personality items. Second, the greater flexibility of ideal point model allowed utilization of greater numbers of items for scale construction. The ideal point model could readily use items located in the middle of the trait continuum, while traditional approaches found them virtually useless. Third, scales designed using the ideal point model provided more information, and, hence greater measurement precision. Results also indicated that new ideal point scales showed evidence of construct validity. A number of implications for using ideal point methods in personality scale construction were discussed.
