An Environment for Interactive Parallel Numerical Computing
Abstract
dc:descriptionIn the past decades, the use of massively parallel supercomputers and distributed systems has increased, while the cost of computational resources has decreased steadily. This has lead to the emergence of a new dominant cost---that of the human developer. The solution of large-scale scientific problems has generated a need for development environments that ensure good human efficiency in the development of an application, in addition to the application's computational efficiency. We have developed an environment for rapid-prototyping of scientific codes, combining the ease-of-use of a MATLAB-like interactive interface with the high performance of a massively parallel system. This new approach to high-performance computing bridges the gap between high-level interactive interfaces and parallel architectures. It further allows the utilization of highly optimized parallel numerical libraries. Finally, the difficult and error-prone management of distributed resources is handled in a manner transparent to the user.
