Reshaping Nationalist Discourse: Irish Novelists of the Young Free State
Abstract
dc:descriptionWith O'Nolan's novel The Poor Mouth (1941) as a guide, Chapter 4 looks at the importance of the language revival and peasant literature to constructions of Irishness. Drawing on popular peasant autobiographies and Revival literature, the novel, masquerading as autobiography, produces a metadiscourse about Irish identity that shatters the myth of authenticity at the heart of nationalism.
