Adaptive File System Consistency for Mobile Computing Environments

This dissertation presents the Mobile File and Adaptation System (MFAS), the first file system to be designed specially for partially connected operation. While MFAS supports the extreme modes of full connection and disconnection gracefully, its major innovation is in using the scarce, but available, intermittent networking connectivity in order to keep critical parts of files consistent between the mobile user and the home. In addition to supporting updates-only file consistency, MFAS provides an adaptation API for mobility-aware applications, giving them fine-grained control of their file caching and consistency policies.
