Analysis and Cross -Layer Design of Medium Access and Scheduling in Wireless Mesh Networks

Due to the characteristics of wireless PHY/MAC, cross-layer design is needed to achieve good performance in multihop wireless mesh networks. We propose a cross-layer scheme to coordinate the operations of different layers in IEEE 802.16 backhaul mesh networks where the nodes are equipped with beamforming multiple antennas. We also study the cross-layer optimization problem for WMNs which employ IEEE 802.11 type simple transceivers, and design a completely distributed cross-layer resource allocation scheme that incorporates PHY layer power control and rate adaptation, and is aware of power constraints.
