New Techniques for Multicarrier Communication Systems

Common to all OFDM systems is a large peak-to-average-power ratio (PAR) problem, which can lead to low power efficiency and nonlinear distortion at the transmit power amplifier. Tone reservation uses unavailable or reserved tones to design a peak-cancelling signal that lowers the PAR of a transmit OFDM block. Active-set methods provide a fast-converging PAR reduction technique that can be applied to real- and complex-baseband OFDM systems. In systems where data tones cannot be sacrificed, PAR reduction can be obtained using active (data-carrying) subchannels where outer constellation points are dynamically moved, within margin-preserving constraints, to reduce the peak magnitude. This scheme, known as active constellation extension (ACE), simultaneously decreases the bit error rate slightly while substantially reducing the peak magnitude.
