Reaggregation: Parents of Children With Severe Disabilities Merge Two Worlds

The author suggests borrowing the terms communitas, liminality, and reaggregation from Turner (1974) and adapting them to the parents: initially parents belong to an aggregate of all parents or a communitas; then they learn about their children's disabilities and are thrust into the world of disabilities or liminality; and finally, they are able to reaggregate to some degree to the communitas of parents. Suggestions for professionals who work with parents and children with disabilities are provided as well as a discussion of the author as the instrument in naturalistic, qualitative research.
