The Impact of a Commercially Prepared Science Program on Science Education and Scientific Literacy Among Elementary Students

A three part model for good science instruction is proposed consisting of: (a) availability of resources, (b) teacher-mediated instruction and discussion, and (c) student inquiry. WOS is heavily weighted toward science content information and is most useful either as a reference resource or as a prompt for teacher-mediated instruction. Its greatest potential is the videodiscs' ability to provide resource materials. The program was least effective in supporting an inquiry approach to science instruction.
