A History and Socio-Cultural Examination of the Long Beach Municipal Band

This study is an examination of community-based instrumental music organizations that existed in Long Beach, California between 1890 and 1980, and specifically focuses upon the social, political, economic, and educational relationships that evolved between the Long Beach Municipal Band and the community at large. The Long Beach Municipal Band was a professional wind band that was brought under civic authority in 1909, was supported by tax revenues in 1911, and existed as a full-time professional ensemble until 1978. The social and artistic role of music and bands in this community is examined as it is related to: (1) the gradual development of Long Beach as a Chautauqua center in the 1880s, (2) the evolution of Long Beach as a recreational tourist destination by the early 1900s, and (3) beyond.
